We recently spent a beautiful fall weekend camping and biking in Virginia. Our home for the weekend would be Grindstone Campground outside of Damascus Va. This lovely campground located in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. The area has abundant hiking opportunities.
This would be our second time camping here, and both times the reason for the trip was to bike the Virginia Creeper Trail. We had biked it in the summer several years ago, this time we came for the fall foliage. We were not disappointed.
The Virginia Creeper Trail is a multi use (hiking, biking, horseback, etc.) trail on a old railroad path. The trail runs approx. 34 miles from Abington Va. through Damascus Va., up to and just past White Top Mtn. near the NC state line. The last Virginia Creeper train run was in 1977. Most of the trail winds through private property, with a public corridor (trail) just a few feet wide. There are over 45 trestle crossings along the trail. This is a photographer's paradise.
We biked the most popular section, White Top mtn. down to Damascus Va. This trek is approx. 17 miles, and mostly down hill. Its a beautiful ride. The birding is great along the trail, also if you are a geocacher, you will find ample opportunity to enjoy your hobby along the trail.
The Creeper trail is recognized as being one of the best biking trails in the nation. It is easy to understand why.
