Lost! A Ranger's Journal of Search and Rescue
I read this book a few months back and really enjoyed it. It is written by Dwight McCarter, a 30 year veteran of the National Park Service, mainly in the Great Smokey Mtns. The book is based on his journal of the search and rescue efforts he was involved in during his career.
When things start to go bad, they have a way of getting worse very fast. This is a great collection of true stories, some ending happily others tragically. A story of the dangers that lurk just a few steps off a well worn trail. It is amazing to read that several of the hikers written about in his journal, made a lot of the same mistakes and showed the same patterns. This is a great little read for anyone that loves the trail.
Note: Currently in the nearby Pisgah Forrest, a massive search is underway for two elderly hikers, a married couple, both in their 80s who have been missing for two weeks. Cell phone records show a 911 call was placed from their cell phone and GPS coordinates show where the call was made from, but the call never went through. Their vehicle was found at a trailhead. Both are avid hikers, and are familar with these trails. Its a HUGE area, Lisa and I have hiked some of the trails before, and it gets very remote, very fast.
Gods speed to the S&R teams on the ground!
