Pinckneyville

When I was growing up, Pinckneyville was one of several destinations for Sunday drives(aka rambles), my father would take us on. I always enjoyed looking around the(any)old structures. You see when I was a child, you entertained yourself outdoors, not on a couch, in front of a video game.
Later on as a teenager, I began to hear stories of a different kind about Pickneyville, stories of hauntings etc. You could always count on a good story about this place to surface around Halloween each year. In the late 1980s to early 1990s, there was a lot of talk about satanists' using this site, namely the jailhouse, for rituals.
Well one Halloween night in either 1991 or 1992, myself, Lisa, and our friends; Todd, Renee, Sherry, Trish, and Norma, decided we were gonna drive down to Pinckneyville and see if all the rumors were true. We took two vehicles. Driving Hwy 18 at night is a pretty isolated feeling, most of it is really rural, and after the couple of turns off of the main highway to get to the site, you end up on a gravel road that seems to go on forever. Well, tensions were high as we approached GZ, and quite as a mouse inside the car. When we arrived, all of us were relieved that not one soul, alive or dead, was there other than our caravan. Then the bravado began. Flashlights in hand, we walked around the structures, proclaiming our bravery, even with Todd making devil faces with the flashlight under his chin in the pitch black night. We probably spent an hour or so there before we headed back toward Gaffney. We were soon to find out, our departure would not be without incident. Driving up the long gravel road, our vehicle in back, we saw two pair of headlights coming toward us, we slowed immediately as the road is not wide. As our two vehicles approached the oncoming vehicles, the cars slowed, and as we came along side the oncoming cars, all four cars all but stopped. There to our left, were two black Cadillacs with TENNESSEE license plates siting on a back road in B.F.E. in the middle of the night. Todd screamed like a girl, and the rest of us joined him in perfect harmony. I assure you, more Gs' have never been felt in a Buick Skylark. What those vehicles were doing there, and how they even knew about the place is beyond me. I am not certain that I want to know. That night still makes me laugh every time I think about it.
Lisa and I were in the area a couple of weeks ago, and tried to drive out there (daylight) to see if anything still remains. It appears all access is now private.

Info from the NRHP site:

When Pinckney District was created in 1791, it comprised the counties of Union, Spartanburg, York, and Chester. Three commissioners appointed by the Legislature selected a place in the northern part of Union county for the new court house town to be established. Pinckneyville is one of the earliest settlements in the South Carolina backcountry. It reflects the spread of justice throughout the state in the early years and the beginnings of representative government beyond the border of Charleston. For the first ninety years of provincial Carolina, Charleston was the source of all judicial proceedings. For the accommodation of the remote settlers, an act was passed in 1796 by which district courts were established at Beaufort, Georgetown, Cheraw, Camden, Orangeburg and Ninety Six. In 1789, the circuit courts were invested with complete and final jurisdiction. In two more years, Pinckney and Washington districts were added. Although the town never flourished as its planners had dreamed, it does reflect a significant era of South Carolina history. The National Register property consists of 1.75 acres of the original site of Pinckneyville and contains the ruins of the brick jail and one other brick building, usually referred to as the old store.

That is a great story and I am surprised that I have never heard it. I didn't even know that Pinckneyville was a real place- I just thought it was one of those "heard from a friend" kind of place. And yet your story does bring to mind a Halloween story with similar backseat screaming from long ago.

This is so coincidental. I think #1 son's first flirtatious "date" included a trip here. He mentioned it while visiting this week and we drove out there only to find it is evidently now a part of a hunt club. Margie and Roy took me there once while we were out scouting for deer.

Wow....thats crazy b/c last nite me and my friends went down there tryn to see what it was all about. Needless to say it was like 10 at night so it was pitch black and i couldnt see anything but as soon as i got out of my car everyone else was hollering "go go go" i looked behind me to see a huge truck about to run me over as i jumped in the back seat and my boyfriend took off. We ended up getting chased for 30 mins then tried to return to get chased by someone else! But i still want to go down there b/c its historic and my uncle used to go down there and he said he seen people doing the rituials=[ too bad we got chased!

Several years ago a friend of mine (who has since passed away) told me about what happened to him & his friends at Pinckneyville. It is almost identical to your story, his name was Todd, and he would have definitely screamed like a girl *laughs*.
Just wondering if it's the same Todd? My friend was Todd Crawford, and he was from Gaffney.

Yes it was Todd Crawford!
A beautiful, wonderful person.

My friends and I are going to attempt to do an 'investigation' out there, if we can find it, lol! We did an investigation in the abandoned Children's Graveyard in Greenville and got church music w/singing in the background on a digital voice recorder. Sounds very interesting.

We went there tonight, we googled it, printed us a map & set out on an adventure, little did we know what kind of adventure we were going to have. We got there around 8:00- 8:30 PM, it was fairly easy to find, only to find a gate that barricaded it. My friend who drove got out & she thought it was locked up, well,I got my flashlight out & probed around the gate to see the lock was not there, so I pushed the gate open & she drove through & I pushed the gate back into its place. We continued down the road, I saw some 'No Hunting/Fishing' signs & figured it was now owned/leased by a hunt club. Knowing it's not legal to hunt after dark, we drove on, not seeing any signs of life on that road. We were aware of the stories of 'phantom' cars either following people in or out of the area since there is only one tiny road in, we looked for other access roads, only to find one that appeared to go to a tree farm or something. We were down at the monument for 30-45 mins or so, took pics, started recording for an EVP session & I saw a light through the woods, it was coming toward us, I heard the gravel crunching on the road & although we were "armed" to the teeth, we knew 2 women wouldn't be a match for some potential backwoods people or drunk hunters,so we decided it was time to go. We get to the gate only to find a padlock on it now. There is no way to go around this gate. It is a huge steel gate that spans the entire width of the road. We didn't have any bolt cutters to pop the lock, nor did our lockpicking skills work, due to the lock is up inside this steel barrel to protect it from such acts in the first place. We had no option (other than calling 911,which neither of us wanted to do...)than to go in search of the car that had came down that road & turned off. We finally found the people, & they were very nice & told us that they have a vacation home down there & that the road going into Pinckneyville is now their driveway. They said that they strongly encourage anyone wanting to visit the site now to go through the Union County Historical Society to avoid being locked inside. That would not have been any fun. They say that they live so far off the road that they don't always know when anyone is down there if they were to come in while the gate was unlocked & they could've been leaving to go to their other home instead of coming to this one, & someone could easily get locked in. So that was my learning experience of the night, lol, it was an adventure nonetheless.

I think I had my first (and only) paranormal experience at Pinckneyville. Went with a few friends from Gaffney High School. Must have been about 1983. Still don't like to talk about it, but I had nightmares for probably 10 years. I often consider going back to see if it was an isolated incident.

i have heard so many different stories about pickneyville that its unreal. i have heard of devil worsipers, kkk members, and other gangs. ive also heard of a herse coming out the big yellow gate and chasing you, something about a tree and a graveyard. the other week i finally got my wish to ride down there and see what was up. we got down there and stood outside the gate for about 30 minutes. 2 other car loads that were with us left because they got scared, it was about 5 minutes later when a person from the car called and asked how many people we invited down there but come to find out it was only us that we invited. they informed us that 8 cars were flying our way. we panicked and all got back into our cars and sped off. we looked back when we got up the dirt road a little and saw that 3 cars were chasing us and they had there headlights off. they chased us for about 10 minutes and then let up. i havnt been back down there since then.

Spent many a night at Pinkneyville, maybe the quietest (and spookiest) place on earth. Seen and heard many strange things out there, guess just teenage imagination but sure seemed real!! If you grew up as a teenager in Union, SC in the 70's, you probably made many late night trips to Pinckneyville. Too bad vandalism destroyed much of the remaining buildings and they had to close the one lane, grown over, road that "dead-ended" in Pinckneyville. What a peaceful place with many fond memories

I am researching the history of the Bankhead family that became a major political family in US history. John Hollis served in US House 1887-1907 and US Senate 1907 to 1920. He sponsored the first Federal Roads Act and was known as "The Father of Good Roads". His son John H served in US Senate from 1932-1946. His other son William served in the House of Reps from 1918 to 1940 becoming Speaker of the House in 1938. John Hollis's great grandfather was the 1st settler of Pickneyville and actually owned most of the land occupied by Pickneyville. He contracted in 1791 to build public buildings for the town but these were wiped out by a major flood in 1792. They moved to higher ground and started over. He owned and operated a ferry across the Broad River. His family baptisms and burials were at the Presbyterian Church in Bullock Creek. His sons John and George would leave Union County and eventually arrive in Alabama where John Hollis was born 9/13/1842. Any stories of this area around 1800 would be greatly appreciated.

I have to wonder how many, if any people died in the flood that destroyed what would have been Pinckneyville back in the late 1700s .

I live about 4 miles up the road from the place in cherokee county, just off of Littlejohn road. I have driven to the gate and walked around down there from time to time. The stone is still there and so is the old hanging tree. Usually people who practice Satanism do come down there with there congregations. Sometimes I can even hear them from home very faintly with loud music and screaming. As far as Ghost I've been down there many times, so far i've not seen one.

Todd Crawford was a friend of mine also. He told me that story when we met. I miss him very much

Hey I went there tonight, my friends and I parked our cars at the gate and walked all the way back. Right before getting to the clearing where the stone monument is that says you are at the pinckneyville court house, we found spray paint on the ground saying "Wrong Way", we continued on in that direction and found the opening and the monument, we also found a tree that was fenced in by itself about 100 feet of the monument. Also by the stone monument on the ground there was more spray paint that said "Now Your Fucked!!!" which i am assuming is just stupid kids. BUT we NEVER found the jail wall, or either of the buildings. Are they in the woods? Can anyone give me any sort of directions from the monument and opeening on the skinny road? Thanks for any help.

(P.S.) Didnt get chased out...which was a mild bummer :(

My grandma grew up in Pickneyville but moved on down Hwy 18 next to Whig Hill before moss's mini mart. I've heard a lot of stories about Pickneyville but have never made the trip down there. I am considering it very soon cause I am into ghost stories and stuff! Another place to go(which i've heard if you get caught there after hours is a huge crime) is Cowpens battle field. That place is wicked scary at night. Ive heard what sounds like cannon fire and battle cries out there and also seen some creepy ghost like figures.

I went to Pinckneyville on Halloween about '92 or '93. The trees were growing over the road to make a sort of tunnel. It was foggy. I remember thinking it looked like something out of the movies. We saw a small graveyard, and the big stone. I remember feeling pretty tense. We only stayed for a few minutes, and didn't stray too far from the car. I remember hearing some strange noises that scared the crap out of us. Most seemed just like people causing trouble, but a few were unrecognizable. Either way, we left in a hurry.

Went there as a teen and found it to be a place you do NOT want to visit after dark. About 1/2 way down to the center of the circle, four of us saw something I will never forget. It came from the left side of the road, waled into the road and stopped, looking at us with evil intent. This "creature" was about 4 feet tall, had legs like a crane, a body like a duck, and a head like an owl. This was over 30 years ago and still in my memory. I never went back after dark since.

I am a member of another hunting club down at Pinckneyville. I can assure you that it is not haunted, i have been to the town many of times during the day and at night and never had any sort of paranormal encounters. However, we have "dealt" with Satanist groups and groups of KKK members that were using the town for some of their meetings and rituals, needless to say those groups no longer use the town for their meetings. the road going leading to the town and the town itself are now private property and no longer owned by union county. I wouldn't recommend going beyond the big yellow gate without permission from one of the landowners, we don't take kindly to people showing up back in there uninvited.
