The H.L. Hunley was the first submarine to sink an enemy ship. The USS Housatonic was sank by the Hunley off the coast of Sullivans Island during the Civil War. After the mission, the Hunley never returned to shore. There has been great speculation as to what happened on that night in February 1864.
In 1995, the Hunley was discovered resting in the Atlantic off the coast of Sullivans Island covered by a centuries worth of silt. On August 8th, 2000, the Hunley was raised.
In October of 2000, Lisa and I were in the first public tour group that was allowed in to see the submarine. The remains of the crew were still sealed inside at the time.
The remains of the crew were interred in historic Magnolia Cemetery in April 2004. It was called the last confederate burial. The funeral attracted thousands from all over the United States.
This is a great virtual cache, that showcases our southern heritage. The grounds of Magnolia Cemetery is captivating.
It is a place of beauty and reverence.
